There Are Still Good Samaritans Out There!
What a night Vaughn and I had tonight! After discovering that Harris Scarfe have a huge sale on at the moment, which includes bed linen, we decided to go and check it out and buy a much needed alternate/spare doona and sheet set for when I am washing the other.
We found the sheets we were after straight away, but had to look around a bit for a doona set... we had seen one in the catalog that we liked, but naturally when we saw it physically, it wasn't what we thought. So we hunted around for a bit, almost giving up hope until Vaughn found a nice cover, just before we were about to leave it for another day.
To top it off, we grabbed a new doona... the one we were using I've had since before we were married and feeling a bit worse for wear. All up, our purchases cost a little bit, but the savings were amazing!
We then lugged everything to the car and walked up the street to the food court to find dinner. Whoops... we forgot that this was Adelaide and everything closes early, even on a Thursday 'late night shopping' night! So, we decided to get something on the way home instead.
We got back to the car, via the Harris Scarfe store... (the store was open late until 9pm) and drove off. We got to the booth where you pay and no one was there. We saw that the boom gate was open, so I got a bit excited, thinking that we weren't going to have to pay for parking.
That excitement crashed quickly when we drove around the bend and saw that the roller doors were closed and locked. My heart sunk... we were locked in! It was then we notice the 3 or so signs saying that the car park was closing at 7pm tonight (it would have been about 7:15pm that we got to the car park). We hadn't seen them when we drove in... I hadn't even taken any notice and just assumed that the car park would be open until Harris Scarfe closed, as it was their car park.
I couldn't believe it and was quite disappointed. We put our purchases in the boot and were discussing catching the bus home and Vaughn coming in early tomorrow morning and picking it up. Before trudging to the bus stop, we thought we'd go into Harris Scarfe and see if they could help.
The guy that helped us with our purchases, was once again really helpful in making a few phone calls to see what could be done. He finally was told after a bit of running around that there was an after hours number to call and it would cost $50 for the call out.
We walked to the entrance of the car park and found the number, with the $55 call out fee. Vaughn made the call and a friendly guy answered, saying he would be there in 10 minutes.
We were relieved to see the guy pull up in his car not too long later. As on the phone, he was a friendly guy and very willing to help. As he unlocked the gate, he said "No call out fee". I couldn't believe my ears and nearly burst into tears, I'd been that wound up about it all! He said that the call out fee was at their discretion and he wouldn't charge us. We were so grateful and Vaughn and I were grinning from ear to ear walking up the ramp to our car.
As we drove out and past our Good Samaritan, we gave a final big thank you, no way coming close to expressing the gratitude we felt!
So, moral of the story? Always check what time the car park closes before driving in! I couldn't help thinking, however, that this wouldn't have happened in Melbourne... but you probably would have paid more for the parking than what the call out fee (had we had to pay it!) would have been!
